McGraw-Hill Education: Music Theory and Appreciation

McGraw-Hill Education hired us to create 51 complex music theory drills for music majors. This project supports the textbook Tonal Harmony by Stefan Kostka. Almost all the activities are generated by an expert system we developed. The rules of music theory are complex and required a great deal of unit testing to be sure the correct scales, intervals, chords, and rhythms were being generated by the system.

Below is a short video demonstrating some of the theory activities.

McGraw-Hill Education hired ShearSpire Media to produce WCAG AA accessible web-based activities to support the textbook Music: An Appreciation by Roger Kamien. The final package contained 100 interactive glossary items each defining a music term with an example and practice activity. This product is designed for college students who are not music majors. This short video shows a few of the glossary items and how students interact with them.

An additional set of 9 chapters of text, images, and interactives covered the broad topics of sound, instruments, rhythm, notation, melody, harmony, key, texture, and form. This video shows some of the activities embedded within the Elements of Music chapters.
