Berklee College of Music: Notation Mixer Web App
Since 2001, Berklee College of Music and ShearSpire Media have worked on many projects to bring highly interactive music education to the students of the college. One of the latest assets we developed is the Notation Mixer, a jam, practice, and teaching tool that synchronizes up to 16 tracks of audio with music notation. This tool is a central feature of the Berklee PULSE Music Method, and is located in the Jam Room on the Berklee PULSE site. Not only do students get to jam with a wide variety of songs from our PULSE song library, they can loop any section for practice, or mute any audio track and be part of the band. The Notation Mixer can also be used for practicing exercises with play-a-longs, studying harmonic analysis, teaching arranging and creating custom mixes. The Notation Mixer was originally created as an iOS app for iPad and as a Flash-based Web app for desktop browsers. In summer 2018, we completely reworked the code to eliminate the Flash plugin and run on desktop and mobile devices using standard HTML5, CSS3, Javascript ES6, and the Web Audio API.
